Sardinia’s Catalan Gem
The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.

Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations.
Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations. Safe, plenty to do and lots of good places to eat. I would recommend hiring a car. We did from 'Casual Van'. It was great to see the surrounding coast. Really stunning scenery. Would recommend Regina Margherita and La Bottega for meals and Jo'pier. We got to and from the airport by taxi which we pre booked.

Lovely, charming, walkable little city that makes you feel like you're on holiday but it doesn't feel like a tourist toytown. We were there in mid October so it may well be much busier in the summer, but it was not at all crowded and was one of loveliest holidays we've had. Litter appalling.
Litter appalling. Waste bins not emptied and rubbish out on streets for days. Foothpaths appalling and dangerous especially for older people. Vsited Maria Pia beach most days by bus. AF bus service quick but did not seem to stick to a timetable especially on Sundays. Great places for eating. Hotel staff inHot la Magherita were fantastic and recommended many places to eat and very helpful with queries we had.

What an alluring old-world city with some of the best...
What an alluring old-world city with some of the best restaurants and cafés in the world. Our meal at Mabrouk was unforgettable, as was watching the sunset at Ristorante Angedras while sipping limoncello spritzes and waiting for Mabrouk to open. We will definitely stay longer the next time.

You always start the day with a cake freshly prepared by the housewife. The rooms are on the ground floor of a family house with a separate entrance, in front of each room there is an outdoor seating area with a parasol. The location is a short distance from the airport, but the planes do not disturb at all. The beach is only a few minutes away by car. There is a wonderful peace here. Highly recommend!

The room was new and very spacious with a beautiful shower and bathroom, and the huge bed was super comfortable for my husband and our little daughter. The extensive breakfast with local ingredients was the best we had on our entire trip - we would definitely stay here again!

Standouts for me were the views, the unique experience, and the accommodating host who even helped me ship me back the Airpods that I left on the boat. If you like camping, this experience gives off a similar vibe! Just note that you cannot review it from the framework of a traditional hotel. You will not have the same comforts as staying in a hotel, but you will have a unique experience!

The room and the whole place were skweaky clean, Michelina was super attentive and even prepared breakfast for us (and a very good one) past the time that breakfast finishes. There are 2 supermarkets in the neighborhood. Perfect parking possibility enabled us to have easy departure/arrival with car when we visited other beaches around north-west part of Sardinia.

Property is well maintained and has big green spaces and bug parking. The room was big and well equipped. The swimming pool was available 24 h, yet it was quiet .
