have known Coroico for many years from a time when it was only accessible via the “death road”. The town is in a coca and coffee growing area which has brought some wealth to the cultivators and they seem to invest their money into building simple hotels around town. Although, there is an overabundance of hotels many only open during fiestas or bank holidays when the Paceñas flock down from La Paz for a few days. The town used to be a lively tourist destination where one could meet travelers from many countries all year round. Today Coroico is accessible in about two and half hours via the new road by hopping onto one of the many minibuses going there from the La Paz but the number of foreign tourists has substantially declined. Despite being a designated tourist destination, the local Coroico government does not seem to be particularly keen to take active steps to further tourism. This is a pity since Coroico offers a number of good spots and even has a Vegan restaurant. It is a good place to relax, do some laptop work or prepare for an exam in a pleasant environment. It also offers a number of easy walks. Smartphone/internet junkies may find it a little stressful at times since the WIFI in hotels, etc. is often unusable or only works during hours of low use.
